The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, linking the city of San Francisco to Marin County in California.
Construction ran from January 5, 1933, to April 1937, and the bridge opened to the public on May 27, 1937 (vehicles began crossing May 28). it's length is about 8,981 feet (1.7 miles / 2.7 km) from end to end; main span 4,200 feet (1,280 m).
At opening it was the tallest and longest suspension bridge in the world and became an icon of U.S. engineering and modernity. Famous for its Art Deco details and its International Orange color, chosen to enhance visibility in fog and complement the surroundings.
Interesting fact...
Its not called Golden gate because of if stunning colour or the sunset. It's actually located on the Golden gate Strait. Its really strong as well before completion, a strong 1935 earthquake shook the partly built south tower; workers reported it swayed about 16 feet side to side yet remained intact.
