Watercolour of the Garden Court at the Frink Collection New York.

The Frick Collection is a renowned art museum located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Founded in 1935 to preserve the private collection of industrialist Henry Clay Frick, it houses approximately 1,800 pieces as of 2025, including European paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and furniture from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Notable artists represented include Bellini, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Goya, Holbein, Rembrandt, Titian, Turner, Velázquez, Vermeer, and Whistler.

The museum is situated in the former Frick family mansion, a Beaux-Arts building, and offers visitors an intimate setting to experience masterpieces in period rooms.

Interesting facts.

After World War I, Helen Clay Frick was concerned about potential air raids on New York. As a result, a vault was constructed five floors beneath the street to protect the entire collection in case of emergency.

Frick family’s history is filled with labor disputes, corporate rivalries, and even an attempted assassination of Henry Clay Frick himself, reflecting the turbulence of America’s Gilded Age.
