Asylum Chapel is a Grade II listed building in Peckham, South London, built in 1826 by the Licensed Victuallers’ Benevolent Institution as a sanctuary for retired pub landlords, not as a mental asylum-the term “asylum” here means sanctuary.
Interesting fact...
During WWII, the chapel took a direct hit from an incendiary bomb that gutted the interior. Astonishingly, its iconic stained-glass windows survived almost unscathed, a fact that continues to amaze historians. The Crypt then had to be filled with concrete to stabilise the structure. The insides are still damaged and create a romatic backdrop to weddings taht are held there.
