St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City is a landmark Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral located in Midtown Manhattan, occupying a full city block bounded by Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, 50th and 51st Streets, directly across from Rockefeller Center. It is the seat of the Archbishop of New York and the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America, designed by James Renwick Jr. and completed in 1879.

The cathedral features twin spires rising 329.5 feet tall, a 332-foot length, and a width of 174 feet at the transepts. It is clad in marble with over 100 stained glass windows and has a seating capacity of about 2,400 people. Notable interior highlights include the 57-foot bronze canopy (baldachino) over the high altar and a large Pietà sculpture by William Ordway Partridge

Interesting facts...

The crypt beneath the high altar holds the remains of eight Archbishops of New York and Pierre Toussaint, a former slave and philanthropist who is being considered for sainthood.

The cathedral’s cornerstone, laid in 1858, is a mystery—no one knows its exact location, and it’s said it may never be found
