St John’s College, Oxford, is a constituent college of the University of Oxford founded in 1555 by Sir Thomas White, a London merchant tailor. Originally established to educate Roman Catholic clerics for the Counter-Reformation under Queen Mary I, the college took over buildings from the former College of St Bernard, a monastery dissolved in the 16th century. It has been coeducational since 1979 and has grown to become the wealthiest Oxford college, with assets worth over £790 million as of 2022, largely due to extensive landholdings in Oxford developed in the 19th century.
