St Helen’s Place is a small, historically significant conservation area located on the east side of Bishopsgate in the City of London, within the Ward of Bishopsgate. It is a private street that encloses and defines a distinct space around the Church of St Helen Bishopsgate, which has origins dating back to the early 13th century when a Benedictine nunnery was established on the site.
St Helen’s Place is also home to the Leathersellers’ Hall, the headquarters of the Leathersellers’ Company, which has been located there since the 16th century. The current hall is the seventh in their history, symbolizing continuity and renewal. The newest element being the Gerkin which adds drama to teh space. I bet it was a big issue for Historic England!
Interesting facts...
The street closely follows the line of a major Roman road that once connected the Roman Forum and Basilica to the city gate at Bishopsgate and onward to Lincoln and York. Archaeological digs have uncovered decorative mosaic pavements and evidence of high-status Roman buildings beneath the area
