St Cross College, Oxford, is a graduate-only constituent college of the University of Oxford, founded in 1965. It shows how new some Colleges are.

St Cross College is unique in that it is one of only three Oxford colleges without a royal charter; it is formally a “society” of the University rather than an independent college. This makes its governance distinctive—its Master is appointed by the University Council, not by the college itself.

The college originally started at a site on St Cross Road near St Cross Church before moving to its current location on St Giles’ in a leased site from Pusey House for 999 years. Hence the name

Interesting facts...

Archaeological excavation in the garden area uncovered a skeleton of a carefully placed individual wrapped in a shroud fastened by pins. known as “The Lady in the Garden” and is a fascinating mystery dating back almost 400 years. The grave contained the remains of a young woman, carefully placed and wrapped in a shroud. Associated coins found in the grave suggest her burial dates to the 16th or 17th century
