A watercolour of London's oldest church from Cloth Fair and the Sun Pub. This historic pub dates back several centuries, originally known as the Starre Tavern in 1616. John Betjeman was a patron.
St Bartholomew the Great is London’s oldest surviving parish church, located in Smithfield, City of London. It was founded in 1123 by Rahere, a courtier of King Henry I, who, after a vision during a pilgrimage, established both the church and the adjacent St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
Interesting fact..
During 19th-century restoration, workers removed stones from Prior Rahere’s tomb to check his orientation, confirming his head faced west as tradition dictates for priests. However, a worker stole Rahere’s foot and sandal; the sandal was recovered but the foot remains missing. Legend says Rahere’s ghost rises annually on July 1st at 7 am, hobbling in search of his lost foot.
