St Mary’s Church in Newmarket is the Church of England parish church at Church Lane / St Mary’s Square.
The church has medieval origins: there has been a chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the site since the 13th century, and the church’s present fabric still contains major 15th-century elements such as the tower and south porch doorway. Much of what you see today, however, is the result of heavy Victorian rebuilding in 1857, 1867, and 1887.
Historically, St Mary’s became the parish church for Newmarket, especially because the rival town church of All Saints lay over the county boundary in Cambridgeshire. The parish still emphasizes its links to the town and to the horse-racing community today.
