San Giorgio dei Greci in Venice, the historic Greek Orthodox church in the Castello district. It was built by Venice’s Greek community in the 16th century, completed in the late 1500s, and is especially known for its separate leaning bell tower and richly decorated iconostasis.
San Giorgio dei Greci is the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George in Venice and a major landmark of the Orthodox diaspora. It sits by the Rio de Greci and was central to the Greek community’s religious and civic life in the city.
It is widely regarded as one of the most important Orthodox churches outside the Eastern Orthodox world and reflects Venice’s long relationship with the Greek community.
Interesting facts....
The bell tower leans because its foundations began to fail during construction, not from a later accident
It has a Byzantine icon of Christ the Blessing, said to date to the early 14th century and donated by Princess Anna Paleologina-Notaras. Many items such as this waited centuries for the church to be built.
