Peterhouse is the oldest and one of the smallest constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1284 by Hugh (Hugo) de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, and formally chartered by King Edward I. It sits on Trumpington Street just south of the city centre, immediately north of the Fitzwilliam Museum.
Peterhouse began as a foundation for “worthy but impoverished” scholars and has functioned continuously for over seven centuries.
Buildings from various ages including a medieval core and later seventeenth- and eighteenth‑century ranges that together create a layered, historically dense site.
