Palazzo dei Giureconsulti from the Piazza dei Mercanti. Legend attributes Milan’s founding at this spot to the Gaul King Belloveso, who followed a mystical wild boar, now depicted on the Palazzo della Ragione.
In medieval times, it was the busy social, economic, and administrative core of the city, serving as the site for markets, public assemblies, judicial activities, and civic announcements
The square’s acoustics, designed with holed columns, allowed for discreet communication between people on opposite sides of the arcade.
Interesting fact...
The statue on Palazzo dei Giureconsulti in Milan is of Saint Ambrose (Sant’Ambrogio), the patron saint of the city. This statue was created in 1833 by the sculptor Luigi Scorzini. There have actually been several others over the centuries each representing a time of change.
