The Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, also known as One Hanson Place, is a 41-story, 512-foot-tall skyscraper located in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. Completed in 1929 and designed by Halsey, McCormack & Helmer, it was Brooklyn’s tallest building until 2009. The building features a large clock tower with one of the world’s largest four-sided clock faces and is topped by a gilded copper dome
Originally built as the headquarters for the Williamsburgh Savings Bank, the tower includes a grand banking hall with a 63-foot vaulted ceiling, marble columns, and intricate mosaics, often described as a “cathedral of commerce.” The lower floors housed the bank, while the upper floors were leased as offices, famously including many dentists’ offices in later years
Interesting facts...
The clock faces measure 27 feet across, making it one of the largest in the world at one point.
The gold dome seems a little out of place, perhaps because it is. Bank officials insisted on including a dome, referencing the George B. Post-designed building in Williamsburg, against the architects’ wishes
