The amazing floating church.

Normanton Church is an 18th‑century church (on older 14th‑century foundations) now standing on a small peninsula in Rutland Water, the large man‑made reservoir between Oakham and Stamford.

The surrounding land was flooded in the 1970's to create the reservoir, the church can look as if it is floating on the water, especially when viewed from certain angles or in high water. It was actually almost lost but local opposition resulted in it being kept and the floor raised.

Interesting facts....

The church once housed a museum with dinosaur fossils unearthed during reservoir construction, plus a complete Anglo-Saxon male skeleton, highlighting the area’s prehistoric and early medieval significance.
