College of St Mary Magdalene, commonly called Magdalene College. It sits on the north-west side of central Cambridge, beside Magdalene Bridge on the River Cam. Having one of the longest stretches of river frontage of any Cambridge college and is about five minutes’ walk from the city centre.

The foundation began in 1428 as a Benedictine student hostel, later known as Buckingham College. In 1542 Thomas Audley refounded it as the College of St Mary Magdalene, giving it the motto Garde Ta Foy (“keep your faith”).

Interesting facts

An old college with some interesting tales. A fast moving figure is apparently witnessed in the garden. Also a large hoard of medieval coins were discovered evidence to earlier use of the site.

Perhaps the best bit is Pepys Library in Second Court, which houses the personal library of the diarist Samuel Pepys. Pepys’s 3,000‑volume library must legally remain in his exact order and cannot be broken up or expanded, making it a perfectly frozen 17th‑century private library.
