Hughes Hall is one of Cambridge’s mature colleges, admitting only students aged 21 and over, with a strong emphasis on postgraduate and professional study. Founded in 1885 as the Cambridge Training College for Women, it was created to provide advanced teacher training for women and later renamed Hughes Hall in honour of its first principal, Elizabeth Phillips Hughes.
