Highclere Castle is a grand stately home located in Hampshire, England, owned by the Earls of Carnarvon. The castle has over 200 rooms and stands on an estate of around 5,000 acres.
It was originally built in 1679, with major renovations in the 1840s by architect Sir Charles Barry, who gave the castle its distinctive Jacobethan and Italianate style. The estate dates back to 749 when the land was controlled by the bishops of Winchester, and the building evolved from a medieval palace through various phases to the present castle.
Highclere Castle is famous as the main filming location for the television series “Downton Abbey” (2010-2015) and its subsequent films.
Interesting facts...
The 5th Earl of Carnarvon, an Egyptologist who helped sponsor the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, brought back many authentic Egyptian artifacts. These treasures were initially hidden in the castle’s basement to avoid taxes... you do wonder what kind of Mummy tax that was?
