Hensol Castle is a striking Gothic Revival mansion in South Wales. It’s a Grade I listed building with a rich history dating back to at least 1419.

Nestled in the Vale of Glamorgan near Pendoylan, about 11 miles west of Cardiff off the M4. The castle sits within Grade II-listed parklands. Originally built in the late 17th or early 18th century, possibly by Roger Morris, with major expansions around 1735 by William Talbot. Later Gothic features like castellations, turrets, and a perpendicular style were added in the 1840s by T.H. Wyatt and David Brandon. The south range is an early example of Gothic Revival in Britain.

Interesting facts...

In 1815 Hensol was bought by Benjamin Hall, MP, whose son (also Benjamin Hall) became Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Board of Works. That younger Benjamin Hall oversaw the later stages of rebuilding the Houses of Parliament, including installing the great Westminster clock; “Big Ben” is widely said to be named after him because he was a physically imposing, towering figure.
