Green Templeton College is one of the newest graduate colleges at the University of Oxford, founded in 2008 through the merger of Green College and Templeton College. It is located on Woodstock Road, North Oxford, centered around the Radcliffe Observatory Painted above), an 18th‑century architectural landmark modelled on the Tower of the Winds in Athens.
The Observatory was built following the observation of Venus in 1769 by Thomas Hornsby from a nearby infirmary. He petitioned the Radcliffe Trustees, who were managing the vast estate of Dr John Radcliffe (1652–1714), to build an observatory from the estate’s income.
Designed by James Wyatt and completed around 1794. The observatory’s octagonal tower closely echoes the Athenian prototype, complete with sculptures of the eight winds encircling its upper section and Coade stone Zodiac reliefs symbolising astronomy.
Interesting facts...
When Green College inherited the site in 1979, restorers discovered several sealed stairways and blocked doorways in the basement. These have never been explored, I wonder what's down there?
