Watercolour of a really historic alley.
Goodwin’s Court is a narrow historic alley in Covent Garden, London, running between St Martin’s Lane and Bedfordbury. It’s known for its preserved Georgian-era character, gas lamps, and strong association with the look and feel of old London; some sources also link it to Harry Potter inspiration and to Nell Gwyn, though that connection is not firmly proven.
The court appears to have been built up around the late 17th century, with a plaque dating the houses to 1690 and earlier references to the passage as Fishers Alley. It survives as a small, atmospheric side passage rather than a major street, which is part of its appeal. I often struggle to find it even when I want to go there
Interesting facts....
It was originally called Fishers Alley before being associated with the Goodwin name around 1690. Robert Fisher was the landowner and Goidwin built the shops. showing how fascinating layers build up the London we love.
