Beautiful watercolour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Located in Southwark is a modern reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre, built in 1599 by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, Shakespeare’s playing company. The original theatre was destroyed by fire in 1613, rebuilt in 1614, and demolished in 1644.

The current Globe Theatre, located on Bankside near the River Thames, opened in 1997. It was founded by Sam Wanamaker and designed to replicate the Elizabethan playhouse as faithfully as possible, incorporating historical research and modern safety standards. It hosts Shakespearean plays and other productions during its summer season and features the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for indoor performances.
