Its underground gold vault is the world’s largest known monetary-gold storage, holding over 6,300 metric tons of gold, mostly for foreign central banks and international organisations—not the U.S. government itself. The building’s vault is secured by a 90-short-ton circular door and sits 80 feet below street level, resting on Manhattan bedrock.
