Watercolour of Federal Hall. Federal Hall in New York City is a historic site located at 26 Wall Street in Manhattan’s Financial District. The original Federal Hall was built in 1703 as New York’s City Hall and later became the first capitol building of the United States under the Constitution. It served as the meeting place of the First United States Congress and was the site of George Washington’s first presidential inauguration in 1789.The original building was demolished in 1812. The current Federal Hall National Memorial, completed in 1842, is a Greek Revival-style building originally constructed as the U.S. Custom House. It features a colonnade of Doric columns and a domed rotunda designed by John Frazee. The building now operates as a museum and memorial dedicated to the early history of the United States, including exhibits on George Washington’s inauguration, the U.S. Constitution, and notable historical events like the trial of John Peter Zenger

 

Interesting facts…

The Bible used for George Washington’s inauguration and pieces of the original balcony railing where he took the oath are still preserved at Federal Hall today
