Emmanuel College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1584 on the site of a former Dominican friary and now one of the larger colleges in the university.
Emmanuel was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay as a Protestant college, using the buildings and site of a dissolved Dominican priory on St Andrew’s Street in central Cambridge.Elements of the medieval priory survive in the plan: the College Hall stands on the foundations of the monastery nave, and earlier the friars’ chapel and refectory were repurposed as the college’s first hall and chapel.
The present chapel, one of only three buildings in Cambridge designed by Christopher Wren, was built in the later 17th century and completed in 1677, replacing the earlier converted friary chapel (shown above)
Interesting fact...
The college maintains a large population of ducks around its ponds and gardens, inspiring unique student customs like naming “college families” after ducklings to help freshers integrate.
