Down Hall is a historic Victorian country house and estate located near Hatfield Heath on the Hertfordshire and Essex border in England. The estate covers 110 acres of woodland, parkland, and landscaped gardens, some protected by the Essex Wildlife Trust. The current Italianate mansion was completed in 1873 and was designed by architect Frederick Pepys Cockerell.

Historically, Down Hall dates back to the 11th century and has connections to poet Matthew Prior and several notable owners, including the Selwin family. During World War I, it served as a sanatorium for wounded soldiers. In modern times, it has been a school and antiques business before becoming a luxury hotel and spa in 1986.

 

Interesting facts...,

The house has had so many uses During World War I, Down Hall was used as a sanatorium for wounded soldiers. During the Pandemic it was a filming location for  The Great British Bake Off
