Darwin College is a constituent postgraduate college of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1964 as the university’s first graduate-only institution and the first to admit both men and women. Located on the River Cam opposite Queens’ College, it occupies historic sites like Newnham Grange, formerly home to Charles Darwin’s descendants.

Newnham Grange, titslef, traces to 1790s leases amid the Beales family’s corn and coal empire; Patrick Beales Jr., Cambridge’s treasurer, absconded in 1869 with £6,000-7,000 in confused (or falsified) accounts, evading justice.

Interesting facts...

Margaret Elizabeth Keynes (family connection via Darwin relatives) lived at Newnham Grange pre-college era; during WWI, she cracked German hat ciphers for the Admiralty at a secret address, later relocating atop the building.
