Castle Howard is a grand English country house located in Henderskelfe, North Yorkshire, approximately 15 miles north of York. It is one of Britain’s finest Baroque stately homes, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, with construction beginning in 1699 and the house completed by 1811. The house boasts a spectacular Great Hall under an 80-foot-high painted and gilded dome and contains outstanding collections of paintings and classical sculptures. The estate covers around 1,000 acres of parkland featuring statues, temples such as the Temple of the Four Winds (I have also painted this), lakes, fountains including the famous Prince of Wales Fountain, and notable gardens like the Walled Garden with its collection of old and modern roses, rhododendrons, and rare trees.
Castle Howard has been a family home for the Howard family for over 300 years and has also served as a filming location for many film and television productions, most famously for the TV adaptation and film of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited and more recently Netflix’s Bridgerton.

Castle Howard’s vast estate was created by demolishing the original village of Henderskelfe to clear the landscape for ornamental gardens, lakes, fountains, and statues!
