Carfax Tower is a historic landmark located at the centre of Oxford, England, where four main streets—St Aldate’s, Cornmarket, Queen Street, and High Street—meet. The tower is all that remains of the 12th-century St Martin’s Church, which was Oxford’s official city church from 1122 until 1896, when the church was demolished to ease traffic congestion, leaving only the tower.

The tower is 74 feet (23 m) tall, and a city council regulation states that no building in central Oxford should surpass its height (though there have been exceptions).

Interesting fact...

The name “Carfax” derives from the Latin “quadrifurcus” and French “carrefour,” meaning “crossroads,” signifying its central and historic position in the city.
