It was historically associated with Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, and his son Prince George, Duke of Cambridge. The building dates back to the early 19th century and is a Grade II listed mansion, not a small cottage as the name suggests.
Today, Cambridge Cottage is part of Kew Gardens and is used as an event venue.
