The Brooklyn Bridge is a historic cable-stayed suspension bridge in New York City, connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. Opened in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, with a main span of 1,595 feet (486 meters). Designed by John A. Roebling and completed under the supervision of his son Washington Roebling, the bridge is an iconic architectural and engineering landmark, featuring limestone and granite towers and a broad pedestrian promenade above the roadway.

Interesting facts….

When completed in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 1,595 feet (486 meters), about 20% longer than any previous suspension bridge

On opening day, May 24, 1883, President Chester A. Arthur attended the celebrations, and shortly after, a stampede caused by a woman falling on the Brooklyn approach tragically killed at least 12 people
