Brasenose College is one of the historic colleges of the University of Oxford, founded in 1509 on the site of Brasenose Hall, which dated back to the 13th century. The college is situated at Radcliffe Square, facing the iconic Radcliffe Camera.
Its un usual name is believed to derive from a brass or bronze knocker (“brazen nose”) that once adorned the hall’s door.
Brilliantly the college was originally associated with Lancashire (where I am from) and Cheshire due to its founders, Bishop William Smyth and Sir Richard Sutton.
Interesting fact...
Brasenose is frequently cited as the “happiest college in Oxford,” It should be it is the home of the notorious 'hellfire club' (well a copy of the original by Sir Francis Dashwood). The sudden death of a student, Edward Leigh Trafford, in 1834—he was rumored in later tradition to be the club’s leader, began a slew of stories linked to the devil.
