William Morris described Bibury as “the most beautiful village in England”.

Bibury is a celebrated village in Gloucestershire, England, widely recognized as one of the most beautiful and picturesque spots in the Cotswolds.

Bibury lies on the banks of the River Coln, about 6 miles northeast of Cirencester. Its origins date back to the Domesday Book (1086), where it was listed as Becheberie. The parish lands originally belonged to religious houses, first St Mary’s Priory at Worcester, then Osney Abbey near Oxford from 1130 until the dissolution in 1540. The village center historically consisted of Bibury and Arlington, which were separated by the river but now form a single settlement.

Interesting facts...

Bibury has thousands of Japanese tourists every year. The reason for this is fascinating. Emperor Hirohito, who later became Emperor of Japan, visited Bibury in 1921 while he was still a prince and touring Europe. His stay in Bibury made a significant impression, reportedly describing the visit as one of the happiest times in his life.
