Bakehouse Close is a historic alley off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, in the Canongate area near the Museum of Edinburgh and the New Calton Burial Ground. It’s one of the city’s best-preserved closes and is also known for its links to Outlander, where it was used as a filming location.

It has a unique 16th Century feel. Incredibly 230 people lived in the close in 1851 which would have made is very busy.

Interesting facts...

Bakehouse Close hides a much seedier past than its tidy appearance suggests. It was associated with the Cock and Trumpet pub, a place tied to Edinburgh’s nocturnal underworld and even linked in later memory to the city’s brothel culture.
