The Savoy is one of London’s most important hotels: opened in 1889 by Richard D’Oyly Carte, it was the city’s first purpose-built luxury hotel and a showcase for modern comfort, electricity, lifts, and ensuite-style bathing. Its architecture is a layered story, beginning with Thomas Edward Collcutt’s original hotel, then major early-1900s alterations, and later strong Edwardian and Art Deco interiors that still define the hotel today.
The hotel its name from the Savoy Palace once owned by Peter of Savoy in the 13th century. After the palace was destroyed in the Peasants’ Revolt.
The Savoy was a technological trailblazer. Sources credit it as the first London hotel to be lit by electricity throughout, to have electric lifts, and to offer hot and cold water in most rooms; it also became known for innovative service systems and highly advanced kitchen culture under César Ritz. Ritz later left to found the Ritz hotel in St James.

It's the only road in Britain where you drive on the right. The reason for this is politeness. Men would be well positioned to open cab doors for ladies.
