St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel is a high-end London hotel at 54 Buckingham Gate, SW1E 6AF, near Buckingham Palace and Westminster.
The hotel traces its heritage to the late 19th century and was acquired by Taj in 1982; the property was formally restored to the St. James’ Court identity in 2014. It is a bit of a Victorian landmark with historic townhouses and a distinctive courtyard.
Interestingly the hotel’s original design is credited to Major Charles Pawley, a retired military engineer who had learned his architectural trade in the Royal Engineers, so not an architect.
The design is meant to be reserved so it kind of looks into its own courtyard.
Interesting facts..
Most buildings in the area were built on green fields but this hotel site has history.
The land was first used for Emmanuel Almshouses, later replaced by “the most picturesque Almshouses in London” in 1701. so two previous uses is quite rare
