St James's Palace is the oldest and most senior royal palace in London, built by King Henry VIII in the 1530s on the site of a former leper hospital. The palace was used as a secondary residence by most Tudor and Stuart monarchs, who previously preferred the Palace of Whitehall until it was destroyed by fire in 1698. After that, St James's Palace became the official and ceremonial home of the monarchy, hosting weddings, births, deaths and Accession Councils. However, in 1837, Queen Victoria moved the principal residence to Buckingham Palace, leaving St James's Palace as a place for formal occasions and public audiences.
Today, the palace houses several offices, societies and collections, and is still used by some members of the royal family.
