The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich stands as a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and a cornerstone of Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed between 1696 and 1712, the site features twin domes over the Chapel and Painted Hall, with contributions from his assistant Nicholas Hawksmoor. The Painted Hall, often dubbed “Britain’s Sistine Chapel,” boasts immense ceiling frescoes by James Thornhill glorifying naval and royal achievements.

Interesting fact...

During World War II, a German bomb struck the Admiral’s House in 1943, yet the site trained over 35,000 officers amid the chaos; it also housed a nuclear reactor (JASON) from 1962 to 1967 for naval research.
