Watercolour of one of the most recognisable churches ever!

Grosvenor Chapel, in Mayfair, London, is an 18th‑century Anglican chapel that has served the local parish since its foundation in the 1730s and is now one of the last surviving proprietary chapels in the area.

was built between 1730 and 1731, with the foundation stone laid by Sir Richard Grosvenor, 4th Baronet, whose family’s landholdings later became central to Mayfair, Belgravia, and Pimlico.

interesting facts...

Ever thought the chapel looks American, well its a bit the other way around.

Grosvenor Chapel (1730–31) was based on the London “Gibbsian” style, especially St Martin‑in‑the‑Fields and similar West End churches, which were widely illustrated in pattern books and engravings.  These pattern‑book designs were then taken across the Atlantic and used as templates by builders in New England, so many early‑18th‑century American churches look as if they were “copied” from drawings ultimately derived from this London type.
