Bibendum is a renowned French restaurant located in Chelsea, London, housed within the iconic Michelin House at 81 Fulham Road. This historic building, originally constructed in 1911 as Michelin’s first permanent UK headquarters and tyre depot, is famous for its distinctive Art Deco style and stained-glass windows featuring the Michelin Man, Bibendum.
Interesting facts...
Bibendum is named after the Michelin Man, whose proper name is Bibendum. The Michelin Man mascot was created in the 1890s from a stack of white tyres, and the name comes from the Latin phrase “Nunc est bibendum”, meaning “Now is the time to drink”. This phrase appeared in early Michelin advertising, showing the mascot raising a glass filled with broken glass and nails to symbolize the toughness of Michelin tyres.
During World War II, the original stained-glass windows featuring the Michelin Man were removed to protect them from bomb damage. After the war, many original features were restored or replicated during renovation
