The Greenwich Pensioner pubwas established in 1827 and is now a Grade II listed building, part of the All Saints Conservation Area in Poplar, East London. Its name honours the “Greenwich Pensioners,” retired Royal Navy veterans who lived at the Royal Hospital for Seamen in Greenwich—an institution similar to the Chelsea Pensioners for the army. The pub has survived nearly 200 years, including heavy bombing in World War II that destroyed much of the surrounding area, leaving the pub as the only untouched building in its terrace.

The Greenwich Pensioners were known for their distinctive blue uniforms and for hosting famous “one-legged vs. one-armed” cricket matches in the 18th and 19th centuries, which drew large crowds and high-stakes bets. The last pensioner left the Royal Hospital in 1869, but the charitable legacy continues today

Interesting facts....

Despite its name, the pub is not actually in Greenwich but in Poplar, which sometimes causes confusion
