The Pythian Temple in New York City, located at 135 West 70th Street, was built in 1927 as a meeting place for the 120 Pythian lodges in the city. Designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb in an Egyptian Revival style, it features bright, colorful glazed terracotta decorations and a striking facade.

As the Knights of Pythias’ popularity declined, the building was leased to Decca Records in the 1940s, transforming its large third-floor auditorium into a renowned recording studio. Notably, Bill Haley and His Comets recorded “Rock Around the Clock” there in 1954, and Buddy Holly completed his final studio sessions at the temple in 1958. Other famous artists like Sammy Davis Jr. and Billie Holiday also recorded there.

Interesting facts...

It was childhood home of singer Lady Gaga, who lived there while attending a nearby school.

Knights of Pythias, was a secret society known for its mystic rituals, costumes, and elaborate props. When the Pythians left in 1958, they abandoned an array of intriguing and theatrical objects: magic wands, skeletons in coffins (some apparently human, others plastic), thrones, and Egyptian ceremonial garb
