Mansfield was founded in Birmingham in 1838 as Spring Hill College for Nonconformist students and moved to Oxford in 1886, taking the name Mansfield College after key benefactors[wikipedia]. It was the first Nonconformist college at Oxford and only became fully integrated as a college of the university in 1995.
The main Victorian-era college buildings were designed by Basil Champneys and completed in the late 1880s, arranged around a large quadrangle.
Interesting fact...
During World War II, Mansfield hosted members of the Government Code and Cypher School who worked on British codes and ciphers, a lesser-known role linking it to wartime intelligence efforts.
