Luttrellstown Castle  is a historic 15th-century castellated house near Dublin, Ireland. It’s situated in Clonsilla, on Dublin’s outskirts, within a 560-acre estate that now operates as a luxury 5-star resort and championship golf course. The demesne features artificial ponds fed by a stream flowing into the River Liffey.

Built around 1420 by the Luttrell family, who were major landowners, the castle passed through notorious figures like Colonel Henry Luttrell, implicated in the 1691 Battle of Aughrim betrayal. Later owners included publisher Luke White (who renamed it Woodlands), the Guinness family, and since 2006, a consortium of JP McManus, John Magnier, and others, who invested heavily in upgrades. Queen Victoria visited twice (1844 and 1900), and it hosted David Beckham and Victoria Adams’ 1999 wedding.

Interesting facts....

A cursed family?

Colonel Henry Luttrell was accused of treason during the Jacobite wars, allegedly betraying Patrick Sarsfield by sharing river ford details at the Battle of Aughrim (1691), aiding William III’s forces. He survived but was assassinated in a Dublin sedan chair in 1717 at age 62; killers were never caught despite a £1,000 reward.

Simon Luttrell, Earl of Carhampton and Hellfire Club member, was rumored to have sold his soul to the devil, who built him a mill on the River Liffey. Lady Anne Luttrell, famed for “eyelashes half a yard long,” sparked a royal marriage law for succession. A “handsome phantom” reportedly haunted the second floor as recently as 2019.
