Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in England. It was founded in 1878 and was the first Oxford college for women. It is named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII and a patron of scholarship. The college is located on a bank of the River Cherwell at Norham Gardens in North Oxford, adjacent to University Parks.

The college opened its doors to its first nine students in 1879 with fine buildings from Sir Reginald Blomfield and Giles Gilbert Scott.

Notable alumni include Benazir Bhutto, Michael Gove (I thought he was a man), Nigella Lawson, Emma Watson, Malala Yousafzai, and others. The current principal as of October 2025 is Professor Christine Gerrard.

Interesting facts...

A passageway leading to the chapel is known among students as “Hell’s Passage,” named for 19th-century Dante’s Inferno artwork that once decorated its walls.
