Smithfield Market is the largest wholesale meat market in the UK and one of the largest in Europe, located within the City of London. It has been operating as a meat market since medieval times, with a history dating back to the 10th century, making it one of London’s oldest markets. The current Victorian covered meat market building was designed by Sir Horace Jones and opened in the late 1860s. The market mainly supplies butchers, shops, and restaurants with fresh meat and operates early in the mornings on weekdays
Interesting facts...
Its always been a place of butchery.
Before becoming known primarily as a meat market, Smithfield was notorious as London’s top execution site for centuries. It hosted some of the grisliest executions, including burning at the stake, beheading, and the particularly brutal “drawn, hanged and quartered” punishment for high treason. The Scottish patriot William Wallace was executed here in 1305 in this cruel fashion
