Petworth House is a grand 17th-century Grade I listed country house located in West Sussex. Built in 1688 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, the house was designed in the Baroque style and later became known as the southern home of the powerful Percy family, the Earls of Northumberland. The house has Baroque influences inspired by the Palace of Versailles and has undergone several alterations, including significant 19th-century additions by architect Anthony Salvin. Petworth is especially known for its intricate Grinling Gibbons woodwork some can also be seen in St.James Parish Church in central London.

 

Interesting facts..

Beneath the elegant façade of Petworth House lie remnants of earlier medieval buildings that once stood on the site.
